Hafiz know how to use Ad Hominem Circumstantial properly.....

Yesterday me and couple of my friend chatting in front of the library foyer. Suddenly we saw hafiz(one of our old friend in MMU). Actually he came to us to persuade us to invest in public mutual. He said that, now is a suitable time for us as finance and accounting students to start investing and feel the real situation. Next, he told us, if we join it now we can get a lot of benefit because we are still young and can earn capital gain as a side income as well as saving. Public mutual is a low risk investment but generate high profit for this moment. The fund may invest in the domestic and selected foreign market for example U.S, Europe, Japan, China and other market. It also a 100% protected fund that seeks to achieve capital appreciation over the tenure of the fund tapping into the upside potential of the gold, oil & gas sector. After half an hour, we were finished and hafiz left that place. Suddenly rifat said, "Of course he want us to invest in Public Mutual because he is one of the agents and will earn commission from that". All of us just smile. =)From the above clearly that Ad hominem circumstantial is applied. In my point of view, marketers are very expert in doing this. Do you agree with me?

Mind Maps

Do you really believe that mind mapping will help you succeed in your studies? For me, it’s true. It’s proven that by using mind mapping people will understand more about the concept that he or she is learning about. By adding beautiful color and picture on the mind map can easily make someone memories the concept or anything. The whole concept is about the study. This week during my tutorial, I learn about mind mapping. It’s really interesting. Its also depends on how creative you are. Certain people they don’t get the idea of mind map. But to make a beautiful mind map you need to put extra effort on it.
Mind maps are great for brainstorming and working out key relationships between a number of ideas and elements of an argument. They allow you to see the connections between ideas you already have, connect new ideas to knowledge you already have and organize your ideas logically without being tied to a rigid structure.

We can create mind maps for chapters, articles or lectures, or as a writing plan drawing from many sources. The basic steps in creating a mind map follow:

1.Using a whole page, take the keywords and write them down.

2.If relevant, write down the disadvantages/advantages near the appropriate keywords.

3.Write simple phrases or keywords for the evidence near the appropriate keywords.

4.We may like to use different colors or shapes to represent different elements.

Here I will show you how to make a mind mapping using seven laws………
1. Start in the centre of a landscape page.
2. Use an image or picture for your central idea.
3. Use colours throughout.
4. Connect main branches to the central image..
5. Make branches curve and flow.
6. Use just one key word per line.
7. Use images throughout.

Critical thinking helps me to be a good Debater………

When I was in my high school I used to debate .we’d usually go for tournaments and come with good results but not all the time. Then I came to Malaysia to study in MMU and I found out that there is a debate club joined it. It more fun and interesting and of course more challenging! I guess one can’t really compare the too because the levels are quite different. Anyway, in debate u have to reason in a way that is convincing to the adjudicator and the other team. One interesting thing is u can defend just about anything, as long as u gives good enough reasons.I didn't really get it because I always felt uncomfortable with saying weird reasons and conclusions until I studied critical thinking about arguments. My lecturer showed me how an argument can be valid even though some of the premises or ideas do not really follow learnt how to make my statements more believable and convincing with relevant examples and stories and evidence. Thanks to critical thinking i am now a better debater!

avOid cAr raCing.......

This Monday I and couple of my friend went for movie in sunway pyramid. We were 8 people, so we use to with 2 cars. I was driving my car and foisal driving the other car… on the way we stopped on the petrol station to refill the petrol.
Foisal offer me to car race with him………

Foisal- Hay! Shaharul want to car race with me?

Me- Nop! I don’t race. Don’t you know every year in malaysia thousand of young people die by car/bike racing? Other wise it is raining and the road must me very slip…….

Foisal- com’on you scared to race. I want to see how fast driver you are? You never become a good driver unless you race. All good drivers I know they racing regular …… now is 11pm all roads are almost empty. What makes you to scared? If you don’t race at once you will always scared about racing…….

Me- HUH!!! What makes you to say like that, if I don’t race ill ever become a good drive?

From this convocation we can see that Foisal is try to persuade me to car racing with him using Ad Populum aPPeal to common practice.

Tu QuoQue Fallacy

Me, Foisal and Kumar are very good friend. All of we take critical thinking in this semester. Last week after finishing the critical thinking tutorial class we pass around our time sit beside the library......

Foisal- “Smoking is very unhealthy and leads to all sorts of problems. So take my advice and never start.”

Me- “Well, I certainly don’t want to get cancer.”

Foisal- “I’m going to get a smoke. Want to join me kumar?”

Me- “Well, I guess smoking can’t be that bad. After all, Foisal smokes.”

This is a tu quoque fallacy. Because if we analyzed the definition of tu quoque fallacy, foisal did the same thing what tu quoque fallacy says…..
“The fact that a person makes inconsistent claims does not make any particular claim he makes false (although of any pair of inconsistent claims only one can be true—but both can be false). Also, the fact that a person’s claims are not consistent with his actions might indicate that the person is a hypocrite but this does not prove his claims are false.”

My mother also know the proper use of Ad populum appleal to Authority Fallacy....

Last week i had some telephonic conversation with my mother.......

Mother- i am very happy to hear that this is your last semester. So what is your plan to do next?

Me- mom i would like to complete my MBA.

Mother- This is very good news. So where do you want to do your MBA? I heard Nottingham university London also very good university. For MBA they have very high profile course. Although there tuition fee also affordable, and by doing your MBA in different country you also get some extra experience which will help you to build up your life.

In this conversation i discover this is ad populum appeal to authority fallacy. Because what i learned in critical thinking class “Attempts to make you feel a linkage with someone whose “wiser”, so that you will agree with the other person’s argument” here my mother make me feel like to complete my MBA in Nottingham university.

Malaysia is As Like As Heaven....

31-08-2008(Sunday) today I make a new friend his name is Rashid. He is from my same country. We had some conversation during dinner time…….

Shaharul- so Rashid tell me what makes you to come and study in MMU?

Rashid- well, my cousin is Ex-student of MMU, he encourage me to come over here.

Shaharul- so how is Malaysia? Do you like this country? Did you ever come to Malaysia before?

Rashid- no this is my 1st time in Malaysia. And Malaysia is just As like As heaven. This country is very beautiful….

Shaharul- do you know Rashid? As like As heaven is an example of SIMILE?

Rashid- ermmmm……!!!
